All pain is a message from the body that something is wrong. Of course, that makes sense when something is wrong physically such as a cut or a broken bone. The body is warning us to be careful and to take care of this physical problem.
The body will also attempt to communicate to us that something is wrong emotionally and will use pain, typically joint pain, to warn us we need to take care of something in our life.
This type of chronic pain is often hard for your medical doctor to diagnose as often there will be little or no physical evidence that something is physically wrong. To make matters worse, your body won’t be able to tell specifically what is wrong emotionally, just that something isn’t right in your life. From your perspective you have a sore knee, a painful hip, a locked shoulder or whatever the body uses to attempt to communicate with you.
The most common strategy to deal with this type of pain is with medication. While medication is an excellent strategy to gain temporary relief, the real underlying problem is still there, and you might need to be on pain medication the rest of your life.
While beginning to conduct a negotiation skills training workshop, one of the participants came limping into the classroom. I asked what happened assuming she may have fallen or been in an accident. She said her doctor said it was probably arthritis developing in her knee. I asked if the doctor ran an Xray or an MRI to verify the probable diagnosis. She said he didn’t, but it was most likely arthritis. Because she had seen a medical doctor first, I decided to offer her some help and she agreed.
Using the same techniques I will be teaching in the Chronic Pain Workshop, I was able to help her reduce her pain by 90% in less than 2 minutes. She was now able to walk easily and sit and stand easily, however she indicated there was still some stiffness behind her knee. So, I suggested there was something unresolved in her life and her mind would be revealing this problem now. Suddenly her eyes got big and she had this clear pressing awareness that an argument she had with a colleague two weeks earlier was still not resolved for her even though she thought it was over. I asked her when the knee pain started and she said, “About two weeks ago, oh my, this knee pain is somehow related to that argument?!” I encouraged her to contact this colleague and be sure to work this issue out. She did so at the next break and came back into the workshop completely free from pain.
